Frequently Asked Questions

We aim to help answer your questions and deepen patients' understanding of what holistic medicine includes. Take a look at our FAQs below, and don't hesitate to reach out if you have further questions!

  • What is Naturopathic Medicine?

Naturopathic Medicine is attainted at an accredited four-year medical school. Naturopathic Doctors are recognized physicians that are allowed to prescribe and manage a wide arrange of ailments. Most Naturopathic Doctors go on to become primary care physicians, while others go on to specialize in their areas of interest. Naturopathic physicians combine herbal medicine, physical modalities and interventions, and conventional medicine to address the individual’s concern. Overall the goal is to prevent illness through functional medicine. Naturopathic physicians will listen to your story to address what may be the root source of the complaint being presented.

  • What can I expect from a Naturopathic Doctor visit?

The first visit is usually an hour long. This give the physician enough time to gather all the individual’s pertinent history. This hour will also involve gathering the medical history. After the first visit, subsequent visits will take anywhere from 30-45 minutes depending on the complexity of the case.

  • What is TCM?

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is one of the oldest and continually used medical systems in the world. The primary modalities utilized under TCM include Acupuncture, Chinese herbs, tui na (Chinese medical massage), movement and breathing exercises, and diet and lifestyle education. The combination of these modalities promotes the body’s own healing mechanism to heal itself, and to maintain strength and adaptability to the changing environmental stresses. Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine addresses not only the symptoms of an illness, but also the underlying cause as well. It not only is effective for both chronic and acute conditions, but has traditionally been used as a form of preventative medicine.

  • How does TCM work?

Acupuncture and Chinese medicine works by adjusting and balancing the flow of Qi in the body. The full concept of Qi is not easy to translate, but one can think of it as vital life force or energy. If the free flow of Qi is impeded in any way, there may be pain, sickness, or general dysfunction.

  • What can I expect in my first acupuncture visit?

In the first visit, the beginning portion of the hour will be dedicated to a thorough intake to discuss your current symptoms. After the intake, you will have needles placed in specific points to address that concern. You will have needles in place anywhere from 20-30 minutes.

Subsequent acupuncture visits are also an hour long. Intake will be much faster, with a re-evaluation every 5-6 visits. Needle retention time varies anywhere from 25-40 minutes.

  • Is acupuncture safe?

When performed by a competently trained, licensed acupuncturist, acupuncture is a very safe and effective form of healing. All needles used are sterile, individually packaged, disposable needles. So there is virtually no chance of infection or contagion.

  • Does acupuncture hurt?

The needles used in acupuncture are smaller than needles used in the doctors office. The insertion is usually painless. During the acupuncture session, the acupuncturist looks for a “Qi sensation” to fully activate the point. Individuals will usually experience one of the following sensations: tingling, warmth, heaviness, dull ache. Most people find acupuncture extremely relaxing, and many fall asleep during the 30 minute treatment.

  • Will I be charged for cancelled appointments?
